I may not be Greek - or even Cretan, for that matter - but I've been living and working here for over a decade. In that time, I've worked in traditional tavernas, eaten with Greek families and enjoyed the simple, yet enormously delicious food that the Greeks are famous for.
I've also helped Yiayia to rustle up 100% authentic local dishes in the kitchen, helping her to pluck the vegetables from her garden, feed the rabbits and chickens in the yard and get back to basics with nature.

Yiayia is simply the Greek word for grandma. This is old-school Greek and Cretan cuisine that is slowly dying out--I don't want to lose these delicious morsels!
Absolutely. Andromaxi is the mother of one of my bosses when I worked in a taverna--she took me under her wing and showed me how to cook a lot of the dishes we served up on a daily basis. At 85 years old and a former cook, she was a formidable teacher who taught me everything she knows.

The Cretan diet is full of "ladera" dishes. These are typically stews with a lot of olive oil, and many of them are 100% suitable for vegans and vegetarians. I also have a great many salads and recipes which celebrate fresh vegetables as the primary ingredient.
