Basically, a native plant is any plant species that existed in North America before European colonization. In other words, before species were introduced into North America from other continents. Plant breeders have developed cultivars of native species that are widely used in gardening.
Native plants have a long history of adaptation to our climates and soils that allow them to survive where non-native species will not survive without costly tender loving care involving irrigation, fertilization, and toxic chemicals for pest control.
