Standing out in the slush pile is hard. Get critique on your sample pages from an agented writer who understands what it takes. But I've been on both sides of the desk... For several years I edited the venerable Space & Time Magazine (est. 1966) and have provided editorial and copy work for corporate America and democratic campaigns.

It isn't enough these days to have your spelling and grammar in order.

It isn't enough to have a hook or characters that make you stand out.

Editors, and thus agents, want manuscripts as close to publishable as possible from the get-go.

It isn't fair, but traditional publishing has put a real squeeze on editors--and so the work and responsibility has trickled down. Gone are the days of submitting a "draft" as sample pages to an agent. Your draft needs to be prime-time ready--GREAT, so an agent can take it further on to excellent, and an editor can then help you push it even further.

Don't get skipped after the first sentence, paragraph, or handful of pages. Let's work together to get your MS as ready as possible.
