Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a bleed?
In printing, a bleed is printing that goes beyond the edge of the paper before trimming. In other words, the bleed is the area to be trimmed off.
  • What size should I make my book?
Book sizes vary and are up to the author's preference. Another factor is your illustrations -- they must be proportionate to the size of the book. Lastly, look at your competitors -- go to the library, bookstore or look online. Common children's book sizes are: 8x10; 8.5x8.5 and 8.5 x 11 (inches)
  • What is print resolution?
Printer resolution is 300 dpi (dots per inch) or greater. An image that looks good on the computer screen (72 - 150 dpi) may not have enough resolution for print. When having your illustrations created, be sure you specify high-resolution (300 dpi) and whether the image is to BLEED.
  • What do I put on the copyright page?
Copyright info varies. Not all information is required, although you should have the title of the book, All rights reserved to the author, copyright date, ISBN number and any credits, such as Illustrator, Book Layout.
  • What is an ISBN?
International Standard Book Number. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation (except reprintings) of a book. For example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN.
