About this Gig
Budgeting and Scheduling of an animation project seems to be the most common black hole for both independent and professional animation teams alike. I will take the guesswork out of this vital early stage and lay out a clear, comprehensive budget and schedule you can use for your project, or for pitching a spec project - or to just better understand how time and money is allocated in the complex animation process.

FAQ
Are 2D and 3D Animation budgets different?
Yes, the entire alchemy of an animated production varies greatly between mediums and within subsets of each medium, factoring in the cost of software, hardware, overhead and technology solutions which may or may not exist for each project.
Are there online resources to help understand animation budgeting?
Yes many. One I recommend above others is the GetWrightOnIt Animation Price Guide - this is a good place to get started. https://getwrightonit.com/animation-price-guide/
What are your qualifications to budget and schedule a production?
I have 25 years experience bot on the "assembly line" of animation and producing independent animated projects ranging from teams of 2 to teams of 30. My skills as a programmer and experience with projects big and small are the key.
Can't I get my cousin Joe do do this project for free?
If you can, I highly recommend it. Squeezing pro-bono work out of as many elements of the project is essential, especially when self-financing. There are some aspects where you can always expect to pay a few bucks, but the more places you can carve dollars and weeks off the project, the better.
Can you make my project for me?
Probably not. I've got my own projects which I'm working on, but I'm always willing to have a talk and discuss what it is you're trying to create.
Why do I need a budget and schedule anyway?
The reason you need both is that you want to see a finished project within a set deadline. Say you're aiming for an upcoming film festival or next year's Academy Awards - or you need a base plan to begin doling out assignments. It's also key if you're trying to pitch to a major distributor.
