Twitch is a live streaming platform where creators broadcast video game play, talk shows, music, and other content to real time audiences. Viewers can chat, follow channels, and support streamers through subscriptions, bits, and donations.

Twitch is one of the largest live streaming platforms in the world, alongside YouTube Live and Facebook Gaming. It supports custom overlays, alerts, chatbots, and integrations that let streamers build an interactive, branded viewing experience.

Twitch streaming setup covers several distinct service types. Buyers typically choose based on how much of their channel needs to be built from scratch.

1. Software configuration, setting up OBS Studio or Streamlabs OBS with proper video and audio settings.
2. Scene and source setup, including webcam placement, game capture, and screen layouts.
3. Stream key and platform connection, linking the software securely to a Twitch account.
4. Addons and customization, such as chatbot integration, alert plugins, and stream deck configuration.
5. Multi-platform setup, allowing a single stream to broadcast to Twitch and other services at once.

At a minimum you need a computer that can run your game and encode video at the same time, a stable upload speed of at least 5-6 Mbps, and broadcasting software like OBS Studio or Streamlabs. A microphone matters more than a webcam for viewer retention, since audio quality is usually what makes a stream feel unprofessional if it's off.

Beyond that, most streamers add a second monitor to manage chat while playing, and eventually a capture card if they're streaming from a console. None of this needs to be expensive to start; it just needs to be stable.

OBS Studio is free, open source software with no built-in alerts or widgets. You configure everything yourself or add plugins, which makes it flexible but more hands-on to set up.

Streamlabs is built on the same core engine but adds alert boxes, chat widgets, and a built-in app store out of the box. It's faster to get running for a first-time streamer, but it runs slightly heavier on system resources since it's doing more in the background.

Twitch caps non-Partner streams at 6 Mbps for VOD-enabled broadcasts, so most streamers run 1080p at 6000 kbps or 720p at 4500 kbps if their upload speed can't support the higher setting. Frame rate matters too: 60fps looks smoother for fast-paced games but doubles your encoding load.

If your PC struggles to maintain frame rate while encoding, dropping to 720p60 usually looks better than 1080p30 with visible stutter. Viewers generally forgive lower resolution more than they forgive lag.

Affiliate is the first monetization tier, reached by hitting minimum thresholds for average viewers, broadcast days, and unique viewers over a 30-day window. It unlocks subscriptions, Bits, and ad revenue.

Partner is invite-eligible once you meet higher, more consistent viewership benchmarks, and it adds better revenue splits, extended VOD storage, and priority support. Most streamers spend months or longer at Affiliate before Partner becomes realistic.
