Want to use OpenAI or Claude on customer data, but your legal or compliance team says no? I add a PII redaction layer using Microsoft Presidio that detects and masks personal data before it leaves your server, and restores it in the AI's response.
What I protect:
- Names, emails, phone numbers and addresses
- Credit cards, bank details and national IDs
- Health data and custom IDs (policy numbers, patient IDs)

What is PII redaction and why do I need it?
PII is personally identifiable information, like names, emails and IDs. Redaction removes or masks it before your data is sent to an external AI provider, which reduces privacy and compliance risk.
Will the AI still give useful answers if data is masked?
Yes. The AI sees placeholders like <PERSON_1> and <EMAIL_1>, which keep the meaning of the text. After the response comes back, the real values are restored, so your users see normal results.
Can Presidio detect 100% of personal data?
No tool can guarantee that. I improve accuracy with custom recognizers for your data and give you tests showing what is caught. For high-risk data, I recommend adding human review.
Does this make my app GDPR or HIPAA compliant?
It provides an important technical safeguard, but compliance also depends on legal agreements (like a DPA or BAA) and your processes. The Compliance doc extra helps with your review.
Does it work with my existing app?
Yes. I can add it as a Python function, a REST API your Node.js or other backend calls, or a gateway in front of all your LLM calls, whichever fits your architecture.
Which AI providers does it support?
OpenAI, Claude, Azure OpenAI, Gemini and open-source models. The redaction runs before any provider call, so it works with all of them.
Does it support languages other than English?
Yes, with the Extra language add-on. Each language needs its own detection model, so please mention which languages you need.
What do I need to provide?
A description of your data flow and some sample text with fake personal data. I never need your real customer data to build this.
