For my music reviews I put on my A&R "hat" and just simply listen to the music several times before doing any research. I like to get a pure listening experience first and then begin researching the artist (e.g. any previous recordings, artist bios and interviews if available, lyrics, etc.). This way I can round out the review in addition to my pure unadulterated reaction to the music.

Also, because I started out in Artist Relations and International Marketing and Publicity I learned a great deal about the other side of the business that kicks in when the record is finished. I've written press releases, booked publicity related stops for artists on tour, facilitated phone interviews with the media, and put together press kits. I'm focusing on reviews right now but hoping to contribute more in the future.
