My position with Godiva Chocolatier involved providing legal direction on decisions affecting the company’s products, commercial identity, and relationships across the luxury confectionery market. I operated as a legal partner to business teams, helping them navigate issues that could influence revenue, reputation, or the continued exclusivity of the Godiva brand. A key part of my work arose when the company entered new commercial arrangements. I evaluated proposed collaborations, retail opportunities, licensing ventures, distribution relationships, and promotional partnerships, concentrating on ownership rights, financial commitments, territorial restrictions, exclusivity, and exit provisions. I was also involved in protecting the authenticity of Godiva products and branding. Counterfeit merchandise, unauthorized trademark use, imitation packaging, improper resale practices, and misuse of promotional imagery required assessment and, where appropriate, enforcement measures to prevent dilution of the company’s intellectual property. Consumer and product matters demanded a different legal approach. I considered complaints, quality concerns, recalls, labeling questions, allergen information, promotional offers, refunds, and representations associated with confectionery products. These issues were evaluated according to their potential impact on customers and the business. International operations added questions involving market entry, local product requirements, import restrictions, commercial partners, and jurisdiction specific obligations. Through this work, I helped preserve Godiva’s intellectual property, strengthen its position in strategic transactions, manage product related legal concerns, and protect the commercial reputation attached to its luxury brand.
