Designing a fursona and documenting it properly are two different jobs, most gigs only do one.
You either get a nice illustration with no back view or color notes, or a technical reference sheet built from a design that never really got developed. Either way, you end up needing a second commission just to cover what the first one missed.
I do both in one gig. I design the character first, working out species, colors, and personality, then document it as a proper reference sheet so it's actually usable everywhere: fursuits, future commissions, VRChat, merch.
