This forced me to develop an inspiration-proof theory of what makes stories work. Pair that with my teaching experience, and I think you'll find my feedback is specific, actionable, and a little crunchier than the typical beta reader's.

My major pet theory is this: great narratives target our monkey brains, using a language that's much closer to body language than it is to English. Stories need to move, in every sense. If your plot doesn't twist, if your characters don't have arcs, if the suspense doesn't fluctuate, then the reader will not be moved to keep turning those pages.
