Hi, welcome to my Beta Reading gig.
I am a published author and a certified professional Copy/Line-Editor and Proofreader. I know what makes a book work, both from the perspective of a reader, as well as that of an editor. I will use my training, experience and expertise to guide you, improving your writing and developing your storytelling abilities.
You will receive your original Word document (with in line comments and suggestions) and a detailed Reader's Report covering the following areas:
- Readability - The structure of the writing, its pace, tone and flow, and whether it was enjoyable or had areas that needed developing.
- Opinions - Covering the plot (strengths and weaknesses), the characters (how they develop during the story), the hook and conclusion, the twists, and how you deal with moments of suspense, tension, or action.
- Writing style - Your style of writing from a technical perspective (use of vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc). Your use of dialogue (too much, too little, dialogue tags).
- Answers to specific questions.

What format do you want my book supplied in?
I mainly work with Microsoft Word documents, providing in line comments and suggestions using Track Changes. I can work with Google Docs and some other formats, however, you may not be able to receive the in line comments in that case.
What if my book does not fit the three word counts specified?
That is not a problem. Simply contact me and I will make you a bespoke Custom Offer based on your specific requirements.
What if I have certain areas, or points, that I want you to pay particular attention to?
No problem. Simply contact me before booking to discuss your requirements. I can accommodate most things.
Does this gig include proofreading and editing?
No. However, I can include a 1000 word Sample Edit as an additional service, if required. If, after the Beta Reading, you wish to have your book edited or proofread, simply contact me to arrange a Custom Offer.
What genres do you Beta Read?
I will Beta Read almost all genres, however, I specialise in crime fiction (I am an ex police officer) and memoirs, and I have a personal interest in action, military, adventure, and travel books.
Do you Beta Read Non-Fiction books?
Yes, I will Beta Read your Non-Fiction books. I have a background in engineering, the armed forces, sport and travel, and I am the author of three memoirs.
Is Beta Reading the same as Developmental Editing?
No, there is a big difference. Beta reading is basically a reader's opinion of your book. Developmental editing delves much deeper into the storyline and technical aspects of your book, takes a lot longer, and involves constant feedback and suggestions to the author.
Do you have availability to Beta Read my book?
In order to be sure, I would suggest that you contact me BEFORE booking your Beta Reading to confirm availability. I work alone so I can only do one job at a time, but if there is a clash of projects, I will advise you of the next available slot.
