MSV is an animation studio that produced the feature film masterpiece “Battle of Surabaya.” At this studio, I worked as a storyboard artist. My role was to translate the written script into visual form, which would then serve as a guide for the production team to create each scene of the animated film. During my time there, I produced many storyboards for various projects, including commissioned films, personal projects, studio projects, content pieces, advertisements, and collaborative projects with exchange students from Korea who were interning at the studio. Besides working on storyboards, I was often involved in brainstorming sessions for upcoming stories or scripts. I also occasionally assisted the production director in explaining the meaning and action of each scene to the production team, ensuring there were no misunderstandings when interpreting the storyboard. In this role, I believe the most important competency is the ability to translate narratives, text, or briefs into clear and simple visual scenes that are easy for the production team to understand. In addition, it is important to have a strong library of film references to determine suitable camera angles for different situations in a story. Lastly, strong quick-sketching ability supported by solid fundamentals in perspective, anatomy, and gesture is essential so that each character and scene can be clearly communicated to the production team during the production process.
