What is the difference between an STL mesh file and a solid STEP CAD file?
An STL is an un-editable mesh surface composed of millions of tiny triangles (often non-manifold). A STEP/IGES file is a true mathematical solid with native parametric features that your machine shop or CAD software can actually manipulate and toolpath.
Can you rebuild an editable feature tree inside SolidWorks from my scan?
Yes. Rather than applying auto-surfacing, I manually reconstruct your geometry feature by feature over your scan data. This gives you clean 2D sketches, extrusions, fillets and dimensions in a native SolidWorks part file.
What scan data formats do you accept for reverse engineering?
I accept all standard 3D scan and point cloud outputs, including STL, OBJ, PLY, XYZ, PTS and ASC. If your mesh has holes or noise, I clean and align the data before starting the CAD reconstruction.
How do you handle worn out, broken, or warped physical parts in the scan?
I don't just copy flaws—I reverse engineer the original design intent. I inspect the mesh, correct surface wear, restore broken bosses, normalize hole sizes and realign axes to deliver a factory fresh solid model.
