How Midjourney prompts work
Every Midjourney image generation starts with a prompt. Your prompt should be a phrase or even paragraph depicting exactly what you want the Midjourney bot to create for you.

But crafting a good Midjourney prompt is an art form all its own. Before we walk you through how you can start writing your own prompts, let’s talk about how a Midjourney prompt works.
The structure of your Midjourney prompt should go something like this:
/imagine [image subject] [image style] [lighting] [extra details] [parameters]
If you haven’t yet dove into Midjourney’s web app or Discord server, you might be wondering what on earth any of that means. So let’s do a quick runthrough on these prompt elements:
- /imagine is the command you have to use to get the Midjourney bot to start your creation (note: this is already built into the web app, so you only have to type it if you’re using the Discord server)
- Image subject: What will be in your image? An animal? A building? A group of people? Kick off your prompt by describing what you want your image subject(s) to look like so the image generator can match your vision.
- Image style: How do you want your image to look? Do you want it to be a photo, a painting, digital art, a 3D rendering? Include details about the image’s artistic style at the beginning of your prompt. You can also include your art medium here, like if you want it to be an oil painting or a watercolor.
- Lighting: Lighting can pertain to photorealistic renderings by saying you want it to appear like it was a photo taken during golden hour or with cinematic lighting. Or, you can say you want it to be a dark painting versus a bright one with vibrant colors.
- Extra details: Anything else? For example, this could include sharing environmental details like you want the New York City skyline or to be set in the Amazon Rainforest or the angle you want the image to be taken from, like a drone shot. Any other elements you want in your image need to be included here.
- Parameters: Parameters are Midjourney-specific settings that give the bot even more information about how to render your image. Some of these include aspect ratio, stylization, weirdness, or image references.
Other aspects of a Midjourney prompt to keep in mind include your ability to remix your prompt or ask for variations of a generated image.
Asking for variations lets you choose whether you want the bot to create subtle changes or strong differences in its next output.
Remixing allows you to edit your prompt to add more detail if you feel like the bot could use more information to get the image generation right. You can do this as many times as you want to until the AI-generated image is perfect.
You can also rerun the prompt to have the bot try the exact same prompt again, but with a different set of results.

- The --v parameter refers to the version of Midjourney you’re using. Midjourney has just released version 7 as of April 3, 2025, but you can access any version you want to generate your image. - The --c parameter refers to chaos, or the variety between the four images generated. - The --sref parameter means style reference, where users ask the Midjourney AI to reference a specific image. In the Discord app, users must include a URL to the reference image while the web app has the functionality for users to upload their image. Prompting tips:
- If you have an image you want included in your image (like we did with the example above, adding in a specific logo), simply paste an image URL at the beginning of your prompt if you’re using Discord or upload it alongside your prompt if you’re using the web app. Learn more about image prompts here.

- When using the web app, the --p or --profile parameter refers to the personalization you can get when you consistently use the Midjourney app and have created different profiles. - The --ow parameter refers to the Omni Reference weight, or how much detail the AI-powered image generator should pull from the reference image you uploaded to place into your final image. Prompting tips:
- The --tile parameter tells the Midjourney bot that you want an image to be created that can be used as a tile, or a repeating pattern when placed repeatedly edge to edge. Learn more about using the tile parameter here.
- The upscale feature is an important one to talk about here, as well. Upscaling in Midjourney is the feature you use once you’ve generated an image you love and you want to get it ready for downloading. There’s a simple Upscale button you can use in the web app, or you can click U1, U2, U3, or U4 in Discord, depending on which of the four images you want the bot to upscale.
