Creative Writing Reviewer & Story Development Intern
Neovarsity Africa • Part-time
Mar 2018 - Jul 2023 • 5 yrs 4 mos
As a creative writing reviewer and story development intern, I had the opportunity to work closely with aspiring writers in an educational environment. This role involved reading and assessing creative pieces such as short stories, narrative essays, and experimental fiction drafts. My primary responsibility was to provide constructive insights that would help writers improve their storytelling techniques. During this period, I participated in structured review sessions where students shared their work for feedback. I learned how to evaluate different elements of storytelling, including plot originality, character motivation, and thematic depth. Providing feedback in this setting required both analytical thinking and empathy, as I needed to balance honest critique with encouragement. One of the highlights of this experience was assisting writers in shaping their ideas into more coherent narratives. I often guided them in organizing their thoughts, strengthening their story openings, and creating more impactful endings. These collaborative interactions deepened my appreciation for the creative process and enhanced my ability to recognize the potential in unfinished drafts. In addition to reviewing written work, I also supported small group discussions focused on storytelling strategies. Listening to diverse perspectives helped me understand how readers interpret stories differently based on their experiences and expectations. This insight has been valuable in my current freelance work, where understanding audience perception is essential. This role also encouraged personal growth in communication and leadership. As I gained confidence, I became more proactive in offering suggestions and facilitating constructive conversations. By the end of the internship, I had developed a stronger sense of responsibility toward helping writers grow and succeed in their creative pursuits.
Proofreader & Editorial Support Assistant
Able word • Part-time
Mar 2014 - Aug 2018 • 4 yrs 5 mos
In my role as a proofreading and editorial support assistant, I contributed to improving the quality and clarity of written materials used for online content and publications. This position involved reviewing various forms of content, including articles, blog posts, and creative drafts, with the aim of ensuring grammatical accuracy and readability. My responsibilities included identifying spelling and punctuation errors, correcting sentence structure issues, and suggesting improvements that enhanced the overall flow of the text. Beyond technical corrections, I also focused on ensuring that the tone and message of each piece aligned with its intended audience. This experience allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of how language choices influence reader engagement and comprehension. Collaboration played a major role in this position. I frequently worked with writers and content creators to clarify unclear sections and recommend alternative phrasing where necessary. These interactions strengthened my ability to communicate feedback diplomatically and professionally. Instead of simply pointing out mistakes, I learned to provide explanations that helped writers understand how they could improve their future work. This role also introduced me to the importance of consistency in writing. Whether reviewing a short article or a longer document, I ensured that formatting, style, and terminology remained uniform throughout the content. Maintaining this level of consistency required patience, concentration, and a systematic review process. Through consistent exposure to different writing styles and subject areas, I gained confidence in my editorial judgement. I developed the habit of reading content from both a technical and emotional perspective, ensuring that it was not only correct but also engaging. This balanced approach has continued to influence my work as a beta reader and
