An employee handbook nobody reads is just a liability you paid for.

I write them the way an operator needs them: what the rule is, who it applies to, what happens when it isn't followed, and where someone goes with a question. Plain language, no filler, nothing copied from a template with your name swapped in.

I led HR at a construction company of around 2,000 employees and at a multinational hotel chain, and later ran operations as COO of a distribution company. I've written the policies and I've been the one enforcing them, which changes what goes in and what gets left out.
