If you're looking for an authentic hand-drawn map, you've come to the right place! I don't use pre-gridded paper or any help from computers to make my maps. Everything I do is always done 100% by hand.
When creating a city scape I make a pencil-grid in order to keep buildings in line. I then make the map in pencil, and once I'm satisfied with how it looks I will outline everything in ink.
Once the outlining is done I start shading; first with ink hatching, second with charcoal. The reason I use charcoal is because the grid lines are still visible, so I add a layer of charcoal to "erase" them.
When doing a battle, continental, or less structured map I don't use a grid. I still use charcoal to finalize the shading because it gives it a warmer, lived-in look. You can see the images uploaded to my X and Patreon pages that it turns out really well.
