Most data migrations fail after import not during. Records land in the new system but the data does not behave: lookups break, references point to the wrong parent, duplicates appear on re-runs.
I migrate data as a controlled process, not a one-shot copy.
- Mapping first every source field gets a defined fate: mapped, transformed, merged, deferred, or dropped. Unmappable fields are handled intentionally, not silently lost.
- Test run a representative subset moves first. You validate against the source, not against assumptions.
- Full migration idempotent by design. Each record carries a deterministic external ID, so re-runs don't create duplicates.
- Validation counts, relationship integrity, sample audits, reconciliation. The migration isn't done when the data lands. It's done when the data behaves.
