FAQ
My STL file won't slice properly — what's wrong and can you fix it?
Most slicing failures are caused by non-manifold geometry (gaps or holes in the mesh), inverted normals (faces pointing inward), or intersecting geometry. Send me the file and I'll diagnose the issue immediately. In most cases these are fixable within hours — I'll confirm before you order.
What's the difference between a STEP file and an STL file?
An STL file is a mesh — it describes the surface of a shape as triangles. It's widely used for 3D printing but can't be edited parametrically. A STEP file is a full CAD format — it stores precise geometry, dimensions, and features that can be edited in CAD software.
Can you repair a model someone else designed that I don't have the original CAD for?
Yes — I work with STL and STEP files regardless of their origin. You don't need the original CAD file or software. Just send me the broken file and describe what you need and I'll repair or edit it directly from what you have.
How do I send you the file — it's too large for a message?
You can share files via Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, or any file sharing link in the order chat. I work with files of any size. If your file is particularly large (over 500MB), just let me know in advance and I'll confirm the best way to receive it.
Can you hollow a model and add drain holes for resin printing?
Yes — hollowing, wall thickness optimisation, and drain hole placement for resin printing are all included in the Standard and Premium packages for Gig 1. Just specify your resin printer model and preferred wall thickness and I'll optimise accordingly.
Why can't I just use free tools like Meshmixer or Netfabb to fix my own file?
Automated repair tools fix simple errors well but often miss complex geometry issues, create new problems in the process, or don't optimise for a specific printer and material. Manual repair by an experienced 3D designer catches what automated tools miss — especially on detailed or multi-part models
What if the file can't be repaired or the fix changes the design too much?
I always review the file before accepting the order. If a repair would require significant geometry changes that alter the original design, I'll tell you upfront — before you pay — and discuss the best approach. I never accept jobs I can't deliver to a standard I'd be proud of.
