Bookkeeping the day-to-day recording of financial transactions:

• Recording sales, purchases, receipts, and payments
• Reconciling bank and credit card statements
• Categorizing expenses (rent, payroll, supplies, etc.)
• Managing accounts receivable (money owed to the client) and accounts payable (money the client owes)
• Tracking payroll entries (though actual payroll processing is sometimes a separate service)
• Maintaining the general ledger

Financial statement preparation turning that raw data into usable reports:

• Income statement (profit & loss) revenue minus expenses over a period
• Balance sheet assets, liabilities, and equity at a point in time
• Cash flow statement how cash moved in and out
• Sometimes a statement of owner's equity

Common tools

QuickBooks Online/Desktop, Xero, Wave, FreshBooks, Excel/Google Sheets for smaller and large clients or custom reporting.
