OpenAI API or on-device: which is right for me?
OpenAI gives the strongest answers for chat and long text, but costs per use and sends text to a server. On-device is private, offline and free per use, but limited to speech, text from photos and short text tasks. I'll tell you which fits before you order.
What do you need from me?
Access to your Xcode project (zip or Git), the feature you want and where it goes in the app. For OpenAI features, a test API key. For on-device, a few sample audio files, images or texts.
Do I pay for the OpenAI API separately?
Yes. OpenAI bills usage to your account. I keep requests small and add limits so costs stay predictable. On-device features have no per-use fee.
Do you build a backend or proxy server?
A shared API key should not ship inside an app. If you need a small proxy, I'll say so before we start and quote it separately. Basic and Standard work with your existing backend or a test key.
Will it work on every iPhone?
OpenAI features work anywhere with internet. WhisperKit and Vision run on most recent iPhones. Foundation Models need Apple Intelligence turned on, so Premium includes a clear state for devices that can't run them.
Can you work on macOS, React Native or Flutter apps?
macOS, and React Native or Flutter with a native iOS module, are possible, but the scope varies. Message me first and I'll quote it as a custom offer.
