If you're here, you're probably a content creator or a business looking to use TikTok or YouTube Shorts for your video marketing strategy goals. But the million-dollar question is this: Which platform is best?

The short answer is: it depends on what you want to achieve with your video marketing. TikTok is the better option for attracting a younger audience with short, engaging content. YouTube Shorts for Business is best to attract a more balanced audience and tease long-form videos.

But the long answer is many factors will help determine which platform best suits your goals. In this guide, we will help you decide by covering the following topics:

What are YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts is a short-form video content section on the YouTube app. "Shorts" are up to three minutes long and use the 9:16 vertical video format.
YouTube first released the beta Shorts feature in September 2020 (not long after TikTok was banned in India). The US release of the feature came out in March 2021, followed by a global release in July 2021.

What are TikTok videos?

TikTok videos are also short-form videos, typically a few minutes in video length in vertical 9:16 format. Even though TikTok is generally a short-form platform, you can upload videos up to 60 minutes in length.
The short-form video platform has an interesting history, though. First, it was Musical.ly, which was released in Shanghai in 2014. In 2016, a Chinese company called ByteDance released a similar app, Douyin. Then, in 2018, ByteDance decided to expand—they bought Musical.ly and released it under the new name TikTok.
As a side note, Douyin as a video-sharing platform is still around today, but exclusively in China.

TikTok vs. Shorts: 8 key differences between the platforms

The eight key factors we cover below should give you a better idea of the general differences between the two platforms.

1) Ownership

Google owns YouTube Shorts, while ByteDance owns TikTok. The fact that TikTok's parent company ByteDance is based in China has been the subject of a lot of legislative debate, especially in the US. US legislation (at the time of writing) suggests that ByteDance is forced to sell or shut down in the US by January 19, 2025—though ByteDance is trying to block the law.

2) Audience

The primary user base of TikTok users are Gen Z, or otherwise under 34 years old, with a little more males than females. While the audience of YouTube Shorts users is more balanced generationally, it also has a slightly stronger male presence.
This difference in audience engagement gives you an obvious choice if you're trying to reach more 18–34-year-olds. However, the choice is still not as apparent if your primary audience doesn't have a specific age range.

3) Monetization options

Here is where things start to get a little interesting. There are several monetization options for YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

YouTube Shorts Monetization

  • YouTube Partner Program (YPP) offers creators a share of ad revenue from ads in the Shorts feed.
  • YouTube Premium subscription revenue sharing pays 45% of net revenue from YT Premium, but only for subscription Shorts views.
  • Brand deals and sponsorships that pay YouTubers to promote products and services in their videos.
  • YouTubers can use affiliate programs to promote a product or service for a commission.
  • Channel memberships are a fan-funding feature, which you can only get if your channel is in the YPP. But creators get 70% of membership revenue after taxes and fees.
  • You can design and sell merchandise through third-party platforms like Shopify, Etsy, Spring, and more.

TikTok Monetization

  • TikTok monetization includes the same third-party options as Shorts for brand deals and sponsorships, affiliate programs, and selling merchandise.
  • TikTok Creator Rewards Program replaced the Creator Fund, but has similar eligibility requirements: a minimum of 10k followers, 100k video views in the previous 30 days, must be based in a country where the program is available, and more. The program pays based on RPM (1,000 qualified views).
  • TikTok LIVE gives creators the chance to earn money from collecting virtual gifts.
  • TikTok Series allows creators to make a collection of (up to 80) premium videos behind a paywall.
  • TikTok Creator Marketplace is a specific native feature that handles creator and brand collaborations.
Overall, TikTok has a few more native monetization features than YouTube Shorts, making it more challenging to track and manage.

4) Content creation tools

Both apps have a lot of native content creation tools. However, TikTok has been around longer than YouTube Shorts and has the tools to show for it.

TikTok content creation tools

  • TikTok Studio is a tool for creating, editing, and managing existing content. It has features like auto caption, autocut, and a photo editor.
  • CapCut is a video editing app owned by ByteDance as part of the TikTok ecosystem.
  • TikTok Symphony, which is a 2024 AI feature that helps you generate "fit-for-TikTok video assets," and TikTok video ideas is mainly for business accounts.

YouTube Shorts content creation tools

  • Shorts has a few native editing options like Collab, Green Screen, and Cut, which are pretty similar to TikTok's Duet and Stitch features.
  • Effects and stickers in the editor function like Instagram Reels and Stories.
  • Shorts Live is similar to TikTok Live.
Other than those native features, creators and businesses use third-party video editing tools to create content on either platform. So, if you prefer to handle video creation on-platform, TikTok gives you more creative options.

5) Discoverability

Both TikTok and YouTube Shorts algorithms curate videos for users based on their in-app activity. Factors like likes, comments, follows, and the time spent watching specific videos influence the content users are shown.
But there are ways you can improve your discoverability on both apps, which include:
  • Using hashtags. Both platforms let creators use hashtags to boost discovery.
  • Write engaging captions. Both platforms allow you to caption your videos. The limit for TikTok captions is 4,000 characters, while the limit for Shorts captions is 5,000. Use these limits to include niche-specific SEO keywords.
  • Schedule posts. Scheduling posts consistently can signal to the algorithms that you're an active creator.
  • Use trending effects. In the case of TikTok, you can also use trending audio and effects. Your video will then show up on the audio and effects pages.

Find and Hire Video SEO Experts

While these tips can help improve discoverability, nothing beats high-quality video ideas.
Both platforms have pretty strict copyright policies, and they both also use a "strike" system.
On TikTok, creators and businesses get a strike if content is removed for copyright infringement. The platform has a limit of three strikes for "each IP type," so if you get three strikes, TikTok will remove your account permanently.
The first time you get a copyright strike on YouTube Shorts, you go through "Copyright School.” However, if your live stream is removed for a copyright issue, you won't be able to stream again for seven days.
Similarly to TikTok, YouTube gives you three strikes before removing your account, associated channels, videos, and your ability to create new channels.

7) Music and sound libraries

The copyright policies only apply to intellectual property (IP) that the platforms don't license. Both platforms have music and sound libraries that give you access to copyrighted audio that the platforms have licensing agreements with.
That being said, there are a couple of differences:
  • YouTube has a bigger music library than TikTok, thanks to agreements with major record labels like Sony, Universal, and Warner.
  • Despite the more extensive library on YouTube Shorts, audio is usually more important on TikTok for viral videos.
  • TikTok also allows users to create new sounds from audio snippets of their own videos.
As a result, if you want your audio to become part of a viral trend, TikTok is the better choice. But if you need to use copyrighted music in your videos, chances are you're better off with YouTube Shorts.

8) Advertising and business features

Since YouTube Shorts is a feature of the broader YouTube platform, it has fewer advertising and business options than TikTok.
Both platforms share common ad formats, like "swipeable" video or image ads on Shorts Feed and TikTok's For You page. However, the similarities stop there.
TikTok has a business center that helps businesses and advertisers create and manage ads across the platform, partner with creators in the Creator Marketplace, and a native full-service commerce solution.
So, if you're a business looking for paid advertising features, YouTube Shorts is simpler, but TikTok gives you far more options.

How to choose between TikTok and YouTube Shorts

With all the information above, you should have a better understanding of the differences between TikTok and YouTube Shorts. But how do you decide whether to put effort into building a TikTok account or creating a YouTube channel?
Here is a list of criteria you should think about before making your decision:
  • What are your target audience demographics? Remember, TikTok generally has a younger audience and fast-paced trend, while Shorts has a more balanced audience.
  • What type of monetization would you prefer? If you are an individual content creator, TikTok may have more options for you. But if you're part of a business, YouTube Shorts offers more straightforward monetization and has a higher RPM pay range.
  • How do you prefer to create content? If you prefer to use the native platform to create content quickly, TikTok has far more tools for content creation. YouTube Shorts may be a better choice if you want to use third-party editors.
  • Do you want your short videos to help promote longer videos? If you have long-form content for your YouTube channel or a podcast, for example, you can use YouTube Shorts to tease the content and draw more attention. Whereas TikTok is purely short-form.
  • Do you need to use paid advertising? On top of social media monetization, if you need paid advertising options, TikTok has more ad style options.
  • Are you likely going to need expert help? Growing your accounts is not an easy task, but experts in YouTube channel management can help.
Answering these questions will help you figure out the right approach for you or your brand.
